Arsenal Defeat Newcastle 4-0 In Promising Victory

It seems the winter break has paid off for Mikel Arteta’s men as they achieve a resounding victory over the Magpies.

The Gunners come into this game unbeaten in their last five Premier League games, but have only picked up one win in that time, with four draws on the bounce.

They are level on points with Newcastle, who are unbeaten in their last four Premier League games as they move away from the relegation zone. Arsenal, on the other hand, are undefeated under new manager Mikel Arteta and are seeming to gain traction in the league as they look forward to hosting Greek side Olympiakos for their upcoming Europa League match on Thursday 2/20.

Arsenal Player Ratings

Ozil and Saka shine, as Bellerin has a night to forget

Hector Bellerin: Struggled to keep hold of the ball and keep Arsenal on the front foot. A wayward crossfield was shortly followed by a touch that was latched onto by Saint-Maximin. As Arsenal became more dominant he had less to worry about and it was interesting to see him pick up spaces Ainsley Maitland-Niles had infield, acting as an inverted right-back. Other than this there wasn’t much to note about his performance. 6.

Bukayo Saka: Was caught out defensively by Lazaro early on but was one of Arsenal’s first attacking threats. Getting himself forward, he bent a right-footed effort just past the post. Continued to make runs but struggled to find much space behind the Newcastle defence and wasn’t able to play many whipped crosses into the box. This changed in the second half, however, as Newcastle became more open and he was able to strut his stuff. Closed down by Lazaro, he showed great skill and awareness to roll the ball through his legs before laying the ball onto Pepe and claiming his eighth assist of the season. Broke away nicely at the end of the match but just wasn’t able to find Lacazette. 8.

Mesut Ozil: Tried to have a presence out of possession early on but often mistimed his challenges. When going forward, the 31-year-old started slowly but was key in getting Arsenal back into the game in the first half. At first he was too slow to find passes but then began using Eddie Nketiah as his sounding board, creating a couple of chances for him. He then found some great pockets of space to drop the ball into Saka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but neither took advantage. As the game went on Arsenal became less reliant on Ozil but he still played intelligent passes to find those ahead of him. One was clipped in behind for Pepe who found Aubameyang. The skipper then hit the bar. Showed great energy bursting forward late on, sweeping the ball to Pepe and continuing his run to finish Lacazette’s ball inside. 9.

Although the gunners have had a good run of form in the last few weeks, they will hope to see themselves rise in the league table, now sitting in 9th place level on points with, Burnley, Newcastle, and Everton. Likewise, they have much to look forward to on the European scale the coming weeks, with them looking to sneak into the final 16 after the upcoming elimination matches against Greek leaders, Olympiakos, in the Europa League.
